Lubricating the transducer shaft sleeve

The transducer shaft sleeve is a vital part of the hull unit. It supports the transducer shaft, and allows the shaft to move down and up to lower and hoist the transducer. The transducer shaft sleeve is filled with grease. The grease ensures that the vertical movement of the transducer shaft is not limited by friction. The grease also ensures that the entire construction is waterproof.

The ST90 system is turned off. No special tools are required for this task. The following specific consumable is required for this task:

  • Grease

Use an industrial grease designed for heavy-duty applications. The grease must provide efficient protection against rust and corrosion, and resist water washout.

We recommend the following lubricant: Mobil Mobilux EP 2

  • Kongsberg Discovery part number654-079835

The hull unit was lubricated as a part of the production process. It was thus provided fully lubricated when delivered to the vessel. During normal conditions, the lubricant applied will last for a long period of time. Additional lubrication of the hull unit must only take place when required.

CAUTION:

Open the pressure relief plug before adding grease!

Procedure

  1. Inspect the hull unit for water intrusion.
  2. Consider whether it is necessary to add grease to the transducer shaft sleeve.

Adding grease to the transducer shaft sleeve is only required if the shaft is dry, or if water forces its way up along the shaft.

  3. Open the pressure relief plug.

You do not need to remove the pressure relief plug completely. It has a groove that allows excess lubricant to drain out.

  4. Connect a grease gun to the nipple and add grease.
    Note:

Do not use excessive amounts of lubricant. If you add too much grease you may damage the internal bearings. Such damage may result in a large water leak, and it may cause the hull unit to malfunction.

  5. Stop applying lubrication when excess grease leaks out of the pressure relief plug.
  6. Close the pressure release plug firmly.
